The Power of Serving the Ones In Front of You: 3 Ways to Grow Your Audience

We long for human connection. It’s hard-wired into our beings.

Have you ever confided in someone who seemed disengaged and distracted the entire time you talked? As their eyes scanned the room around you, did you feel disrespected and alone in their company? I think we have all found ourselves in this situation before. We laid our hearts on the table, perhaps in shatters, and the person in front of us didn’t even take the time to look. On the other hand, have you ever confided in someone who never broke eye contact with you? As they listened intently, could you see the compassion and empathy on their face? These two experiences are entirely different. Although the person is present in both situations, they produce completely different outcomes.

The same goes for connecting with people online. Let me pose one last scenario for you. Have you ever followed someone that is constantly asking for something from you? Perhaps they want you to buy something, partner with them, or share their content. Maybe they even asked you to do this before developing a genuine connection with you. On the other hand, have you ever followed someone that is constantly serving their audience with free content, advice and support? When they ask for a favor or for your business, how much more likely are you to take that opportunity with them versus the first person? Whether it’s in person or online, we can feel it when people are truly present. We can tell the difference between surface level and genuine connection.

The point is this: We should always seek to serve those before us (before ever asking for their business).

Let me say this first: There is nothing wrong with promoting your business online. I am only suggesting that we do it out of a genuine connection and a heart to serve the ones in front of us. Not only is it better for our audience, but it will bring you more business with the right people. And that’s what we want, right? As human beings, we naturally want to feel a connection with you, your mission and your business before we invest our time, money and support. That genuine connection is everything!

When we prioritize serving the people before us, whether that is 5 or 500, we reap huge benefits. The ultimate goal should be to help your audience by answering questions, solving problems and providing solutions. When we truly care about their life, heart, well-being and business endeavors, it shows through the screen. They can practically feel it. So, whether you’re trying to develop genuine online friendships, better serve your audience or monetize your passion, remember to always serve first.

3 Ways to Better Serve Your Audience

1| Get real, honest and transparent about your story, struggles, and victories.

People want the real deal. They don’t want polished, pretty and perfect. Do you know why? Because we are all searching for someone we can relate to. And I don’t know about you, but I am not perfect by any means. When we can own our story and get vulnerable about the ups and downs of life, people naturally feel connected to us. They  feel a sense of belonging, understanding and acceptance.

Serve your audience by putting some of your struggle on display. Obviously, you can decide however much or little you want to do this. Personal boundaries are everything! So, only share what you are comfortable with. As you share your struggle, not only will it empower your audience but it will also help you become free of it.

2| Give, give, give. People love free stuff!

When you are trying to promote your product, make sales and grow your business, always live by the 80/20 rule. Share free content, inspirational stories and support your audience 80% of the time. Take the time to develop a genuine connection founded on support and encouragement. This will cause your audience to truly trust you. Then, feel free to sell and promote your company 20% of the time. Because you have already been serving your audience so well 80% of the time, they will be very happy to support your business. They will already have a desire to buy what you are offering because your free stuff was so awesome!

3| Get to know your audience. Respond to them and ask them what they need help with.

One of the biggest mistakes I see people making is this: They expect their audience to consume and interact with their content without responding to them. How lame is that?! If you are trying to serve your audience well and develop a genuine connection, always make an effort to respond to comments and reply to messages. Be attentive to your audience. Don’t ignore them. Even further than simply responding, ask them what their needs are. Ask them where they are currently struggling so you can be the one to meet that need. They will appreciate you for it!

Discover your passion

When we shift our perspective from growing our numbers to serving the ones in front of us, something powerful happens!

When we stop striving to reach a certain number and make a certain amount of sales, we can focus more of our attention on serving the ones in front of us. They are already there. They are ready to listen, they are ready to learn, and they are already interested in who you are and what you have to offer! So, serve them well. When you focus more on this, the numbers will naturally increase.
