There is Wonder in the Waiting

The wait is a quiet place.

It’s that space when you’re putting all the work in but have yet to see results. There’s no clear next step or grand ideas that will change everything. It’s just you. Alone. Standing in what feels like a wilderness you can never escape. The nights can seem long and the promise of a better tomorrow far away. This is what the waiting will feel like. You feel it in every ounce of your being as you strive to make things happen. You start to wonder what you’re doing wrong or what you should be doing differently to experience new results, but nothing comes. This season of your life will feel void and it can stretch on longer than you’d ever wish.

In the moment, it’s hard to see value in that experience. You wish it away and are thankful when something finally budges, but we miss something really important when we live this way. The wait isn’t there to keep you from your life’s purpose. It’s not some sign you should give up and turn around, and it’s definitely not a sign you’re doing something wrong. The seasons of waiting are there to plant seeds as you diligently pursue what’s been placed on your heart.

There’s wonder in the waiting.

So much value is infused into every part of your wait. It’s where you learn and grow. It’s in the quiet moments when you start to receive more clarity. You start to identify when to rest and when to push. Waiting doesn’t disqualify you from what you’re working towards. It’s stretching you more fully into who you’re meant to be to make it happen. Take a look around you and in you, what do you see happening? The wait will challenge, but it will improve you. The wait will sharpen your vision so when you’re in the action phase, you’ll clearly see the path you’re meant to take.

Maybe the wait seems pointless, but no season of your life is ever without purpose. Some moments will be more challenging than others, but they’re all of equal value. I’d be willing to bet that if you looked back on your life and used it as a map, every season that hurt, every season that felt like it stretched on for way too long, and every moment you wanted to give up shifted you in a direction true to who you are. The wait doesn’t toss the map and leave you stranded in the wilderness, it lovingly points you in the right direction when you’re lost.

You can respond in two different ways when you encounter a season of waiting.

You can wish it away and close your eyes to the invaluable lessons. This method may seem easier because you don’t have to be vulnerable. Being vulnerable is difficult. It involves opening ourselves to hurt, to difficult things, and to difficult lessons. So it’s easier to close everything off and quicken your pace through that dry, barren land.

Or, you can respond with wonder. “What can I learn here? What is this teaching me?” When you open yourself fully to the experience, the wait suddenly won’t seem as dark and like an unknown land. It’ll feel familiar. You’ll begin to feel at peace and find rest. You’ll start to discover the waiting that precedes breakthrough is filled with magic and possibility. As you stretch and grow, you’ll begin to feel more connected to your true purpose and start to tap into a whole other facet of your being. Then you’ll see the emptiness of waiting transform into fullness of life. New growth will mark every step you take.

Don’t discredit the seemingly barren season you are in.

Though waiting can feel like it’s wringing you dry of all inspiration, motivation, and value, it’s really the watering ground where seeds can bloom. Hold on during the waiting. It won’t last forever and you’ll be thankful for it when you step into your purpose. Without the wait, you wouldn’t be able to fully show up in your journey. You’d step into an incomplete version of your purpose and lack the fulfillment you desire.

I know that waiting for change or progress is incredibly difficult. You want the process to speed itself up and to arrive at the destination you’ve been striving for. One day you will arrive, and when you look back at the moments you had to wait, you’ll see you were exactly where you needed to be when you needed to be there. The challenges you faced, the lessons learned, the heart-wrenching moments when you just wanted things to be different were all leading you to your destination. One day at a time, one step at a time, your journey unfolded exactly as it was meant to.

Stay rooted in hope as you continue your purpose journey.

There will always be obstacles to face, but finding the wonder in those moments will unlock something powerful within you. You’ll become resilient, brave, and be able to move boldly forward into areas you couldn’t have imagined. If you are never without hope and wonder, you’ll be able to find magic in every season. I promise the value is there, you just have to choose to see it. When the waiting stretches on endlessly and the promise of a better tomorrow seems far away, I hope you remember this– there is wonder in the waiting.
